How to Add a Pi Symbol (π) in Microsoft Word

The fastest way to add the pi symbol (π) in Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows is to type 03C0 and press Alt + X. Word turns the code into π. Method 1: Alt + X shortcut

1. Click where you want π.
2. Type 03C0.
3. Press Alt + X.

If the character just before the code is a letter A–F or a number, Word may read it as part of the code. Type a space first, then remove it after.

Method 2: Insert Symbol

1. Click Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
2. Set Font to (normal text) and Subset to Greek and Coptic.
3. Click π and click Insert. Or type 03C0 in Character code.

After you use it once, π appears in the Insert > Symbol drop-down for one-click access.

Method 3: Equation editor

1. Press Alt + = (or Insert > Equation).
