The iPhone Contacts app can store a nickname for a person while preserving the person’s normal first and last name. Supported Apple apps can then display or recognize that nickname according to your contact settings.
Steps
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Scroll down and choose add field.
- Select Nickname.
- Enter the nickname you want associated with that contact.
- Tap Done.
- Open Contacts or Messages and check how the name appears.
Nickname display is a separate preference
Depending on the iOS version, Contacts settings can include Prefer Nicknames or Short Name controls. A nickname can therefore be saved even when the regular name is still displayed.
The nickname does not replace the person’s real name
The original first and last name remain in the contact card, which helps with searching, sharing contact information, and keeping records understandable.
Current Settings menus may be different
Recent iOS releases can place Contacts settings under Settings > Apps > Contacts. Search Settings when an older path does not match your phone.
Synced contacts can carry the field elsewhere
If contacts synchronize through iCloud or another account, nickname information may appear on other devices or compatible contact services. Review the contact after synchronization when consistency matters.
Nicknames can help Siri recognition
A saved nickname can also help Apple services understand how you refer to a contact. If Siri still chooses the wrong person, verify that duplicate contacts are merged appropriately and that the nickname is attached to the correct contact card.
