When text is too long for its cell, Excel either spills it into the next cell or cuts it off. Shrink to fit automatically reduces the font size so everything fits inside the cell’s current width. Turn On Shrink to Fit
- Select the cell or range.

The font scales down as needed. If you widen the column later, the text grows back toward its original size.

Apply to a Whole Column or Sheet
Click a column letter, or the Select All triangle for the whole sheet, then turn on Shrink to fit. To reuse the setting, use Format Painter or create a cell style with Home > Cell Styles > New Cell Style.
Limitations
- Very long text becomes unreadably small. Combine with a wider column or wrap text instead.
- The displayed font size doesn’t change in the Font Size box; Excel scales it only visually.
- Shrink to fit doesn’t work on merged cells in all cases, and it has no effect on numbers that show as ##### because the column is too narrow for the number format.
- In Excel for the web, the option may not appear; apply it in the desktop app.
