To save a Google Doc to your iPhone, open the document in the Google Docs app, tap the three-dot More menu, and tap Share & export > Send a copy. Choose PDF or Word (.docx), tap OK, and then tap Save to Files in the share sheet. Pick a folder, like On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, and tap Save.
If you only want to read or edit the Doc without internet, you don’t need a copy at all. Turn on Available offline in the same menu. Here are both options, plus how to save from Safari and the Google Drive app.
Method 1: Save a copy to the Files app
- Open the Google Docs app and open the document.
- Tap the three-dot More menu in the top-right corner.
- Tap Share & export, then Send a copy.
- Choose PDF or Word (.docx) and tap OK.
- In the share sheet, tap Save to Files.
- Choose a location and tap Save.
You can find the file later in the Files app. Word files can be opened in Pages or Microsoft Word, and PDFs open in Files or Books.
Method 2: Make the Doc available offline
- In the Google Docs app, open the document.
- Tap the three-dot More menu.
- Turn on Available offline.
The Doc stays in the Google Docs app, and any edits you make offline sync when you’re back online. From the document list, you can also tap the three dots next to a file and choose Make available offline.

Method 3: Save from the Google Drive app
- Open the Google Drive app and find the document.
- Tap the three dots next to it.
- Tap Send a copy (or Open in), choose a format, and tap Save to Files.
Method 4: Save from Safari without the app
- Open the Doc in Safari at docs.google.com.
- Tap the aA button in the address bar and choose Request Desktop Website.
- Choose File > Download and pick PDF or Microsoft Word.
- Tap the download icon in Safari’s address bar to find the file, which saves to the Downloads folder in Files.
Troubleshooting
- Send a copy is missing: The owner may have turned off downloading for viewers. Ask for edit access or a copy.
- Save to Files isn’t shown: Scroll the row of actions at the bottom of the share sheet, or tap Edit Actions to add it.
- Available offline won’t turn on: Update the Google Docs app and make sure your iPhone has free storage.
