Microsoft lets you download Windows installation media without paying for the download itself, but that does not mean every PC receives a free Windows license. Windows activation requires a valid digital license, product key, or other legitimate entitlement for the edition being used.
Legitimate ways Windows may already be licensed
- A new PC can include an OEM Windows license as part of the purchase price.
- A computer that was previously activated may have a digital license that reactivates the same edition after reinstalling.
- An organization may license Windows through its business or education agreement.
- Microsoft may provide specific upgrade or accessibility offers when officially announced; check current Microsoft terms rather than old articles.
- You can download official installation media from Microsoft and install the edition for which you have a valid entitlement.
Free installation media and free activation are different
An ISO or media-creation utility can be freely downloadable while the operating-system license is still commercial. The ability to complete Setup without immediately entering a key does not create a license.
Avoid gray-market and “activation” tools
Extremely cheap keys from unknown sellers can be stolen, misused volume keys, or keys that later stop activating. Cracks, KMS emulators, and activation scripts can violate licensing terms and may contain malware. Use Microsoft or an authorized seller when you need to purchase a license.
Check whether your existing PC already has entitlement
Before buying Windows again after a repair, open Activation settings when possible and review your Microsoft account or purchase records. Many OEM systems automatically retrieve their firmware key or digital license during installation of the matching edition.
Choose a supported version
Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. For compatible hardware in 2026, Windows 11 is the normal consumer Windows target. A “free” unsupported OS can cost more in security and maintenance than using a supported platform.
Check whether your PC already has a license
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
If it says Windows is activated with a digital license, you can reinstall the same edition on that PC without entering a key. If you link the digital license to your Microsoft account, the Activation troubleshooter can help reactivate Windows after a hardware change such as a new motherboard.
Upgrading an eligible Windows 10 PC
A PC with a genuine, activated Windows 10 license that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements can be offered the upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update at no extra charge. Check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, or use the PC Health Check app from Microsoft to see whether your hardware qualifies.
Using Windows before you activate
You can install Windows from official media and skip the product key during setup. Our guide on installing Windows 10 without a product key shows where that option appears. Unactivated Windows still runs, but you’ll see an “Activate Windows” watermark, some personalization settings are locked, and you aren’t licensed to use it long term under Microsoft’s terms. When you’re ready, you can buy a license in Settings > Activation and enter the key there.
Discounts that are legitimate
- Students and staff. Many schools provide Windows through their institution’s licensing. Check your school’s IT or software portal.
- Workplaces. Employers with volume licensing often cover company devices. Use their process rather than personal workarounds.
- Buying a PC with Windows. A computer that comes with Windows preinstalled usually costs less than buying a retail license separately.
Avoid these “free” offers
- Very cheap keys from marketplaces. They may be resold volume or OEM keys that stop working or violate license terms.
- Activation tools and cracks. Unofficial activators often come bundled with malware and can be blocked by security software.
- Unofficial ISO downloads. Modified installers can contain backdoors. Download Windows only from Microsoft.
