To change a file name in Google Sheets, click the current name at the top left of the spreadsheet (it says Untitled spreadsheet for new files), type a new name, and press Enter. You can also choose File > Rename. The new name saves automatically and updates everywhere, including Google Drive and for anyone you’ve shared the file with.

How to rename a spreadsheet on a computer
- Open the spreadsheet.

- Go to drive.google.com.
- Right-click the spreadsheet, or click the three-dot menu next to it.
- Choose Rename, type the new name, and click OK.

- Tap the three-dot More icon next to the file in the list.
- Tap Rename, type the new name, and tap OK or Rename.
How to rename a tab (sheet) inside the spreadsheet
The file name and tab names are different. To rename a tab at the bottom, double-click it (or right-click and choose Rename), type the new name, and press Enter. Tab names can be used in formulas, like =’Q3 Sales’!B2, and Sheets updates those references automatically.
Tips for naming files
- Use names you’ll search for later, like “2026 Budget – Marketing.”
- Add dates in YYYY-MM-DD format so files sort in order.
- Avoid “Copy of” names. When you use File > Make a copy, rename the copy right away.

Why can’t I rename a Google Sheet?
You probably have view-only or comment access. Only editors can rename files. Ask the owner for edit access, or make your own copy.
Does renaming change the link?
No. The URL stays the same, so shared links and bookmarks keep working.
