When a FaceTime call fails immediately, the cause is usually a connection problem, FaceTime being turned off or not activated, or the other person not being reachable on FaceTime. Start by checking that FaceTime is turned on in Settings > Apps > FaceTime (or Settings > FaceTime), that you’re on Wi-Fi or have Cellular Data allowed for FaceTime, and that the date and time are set automatically. Then turn FaceTime off and on, restart your iPhone, and try the call again.

1. Turn FaceTime off and on
- Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime.
- Turn off FaceTime, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Wait for “Waiting for activation” to finish. Make sure your phone number and email are checked under You can be reached by FaceTime at.
2. Check your connection
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular to see if one works.
- On cellular, check Settings > Cellular and make sure FaceTime is allowed.
- Some workplace, school and hotel networks block FaceTime. Try a different network.
- Turn off any VPN and try again.
3. Restart and update
Restart your iPhone, and install any updates in Settings > General > Software Update. The other person should update too, since FaceTime features can depend on both devices.
4. Check the person you’re calling
- Make sure you’re calling the phone number or email they use for FaceTime.
- Their phone may be off, in Do Not Disturb or a Focus, or out of signal.
- They may have blocked you, or you may have blocked them. Check your Blocked Contacts list.
- Android and Windows users can only join FaceTime by link. Create a link in the FaceTime app and send it to them.
5. Sign out of your Apple Account in FaceTime
- In Settings > Apps > FaceTime, tap your Apple Account.
- Tap Sign Out.
- Sign back in and wait for activation.
6. Reset network settings
As a last resort, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, so have them ready.

FaceTime isn’t available in every country, and some carriers or regions restrict it. If FaceTime is missing from your iPhone entirely, it may not be offered where the device was sold.
