Word Wise displays short definitions above difficult words in supported Kindle books. You can turn it off while reading if the hints distract from the page.
- Open a Kindle book that supports Word Wise.
- Tap near the top of the page to show the reading controls.
- Open the reading/display options and locate Word Wise.
- Turn Word Wise off or move its hint setting to the minimum/off position, depending on the Kindle model or app version.
- Return to the page and confirm the definitions are gone.
The option only appears in supported books
Not every Kindle title includes Word Wise data. If the control is missing, try a book known to support the feature before troubleshooting the device.
Kindle models differ
Amazon has changed reading menus across Kindle hardware and Kindle apps. Look under reading, font, or display controls if the label is not immediately visible.
Vocabulary tools remain available
Turning off Word Wise does not normally prevent you from selecting a word to open the dictionary or other reference tools.
