How to Turn Off the Caps Lock Notification in Windows 10

To stop the Caps Lock notification in Windows 10, first figure out what kind it is. A beep or tone comes from Windows Toggle Keys, which you can turn off in Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. A “Caps Lock On” pop-up on the screen almost always comes from your PC maker’s or keyboard maker’s software, so you turn it off in that app instead. Both fixes are below.

Note: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) now run until October 12, 2027. These steps still work on Windows 10, but upgrading to Windows 11 is the long-term way to keep getting security fixes.

Step 1: Identify the notification

Press Caps Lock a few times and watch and listen:

• A sound only: Windows Toggle Keys is on. Go to Method 1.
• A box or icon on screen: an on-screen display (OSD) from software such as Lenovo Vantage, HP’s hotkey utilities, Dell or Logitech keyboard software. Go to Method 2.
• Both: do both methods.

Windows 10 itself doesn’t show a visual Caps Lock pop-up by default, which is why it usually isn’t in Windows settings.

Method 1: Turn off the Caps Lock sound (Toggle Keys)

1. Open Settings (press Windows + I).
2. Select Ease of Access, then Keyboard in the left pane.
3. Under Use Toggle Keys, turn off Play a sound whenever you press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock.
4. Also uncheck Allow the shortcut key to start Toggle Keys. Otherwise, holding Num Lock for five seconds turns it back on.

Using Control Panel instead

1. Open Control Panel > Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center.
2. Select Make the keyboard easier to use.
3. Uncheck Turn on Toggle Keys and select OK.

Method 2: Turn off the on-screen Caps Lock pop-up

Look for the app that came with your laptop or keyboard. Common ones include:

• Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage or the Lenovo hotkey/utility app. Look in the input or keyboard settings for an on-screen display or Caps Lock/Num Lock indicator option.
• HP: HP’s hotkey support and system event utilities show the pop-up on many models. Check for an on-screen display setting, or disable the utility (see below).
• Dell: some models show the indicator through Dell’s keyboard or function-key software.
• Logitech keyboards: Logitech Options or Logi Options+ can show Caps Lock notifications. Open the app, select your keyboard, and turn off the Caps Lock and Num Lock notifications.

If you can’t find a setting:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and select More details if needed.
2. Open the Startup tab and look for the OEM or keyboard utility.
3. Right-click it, choose Disable, and restart the PC.

Disabling these utilities can also turn off other hotkey pop-ups, such as volume or brightness indicators, and on a few laptops it can affect special function keys. If something stops working, enable the app again and look for its settings instead.

Troubleshooting

• The sound came back after a restart: make sure the Toggle Keys shortcut option is unchecked.
• The pop-up returned after an update: manufacturer apps sometimes reinstall or reset their settings through Windows Update or their own updater. Repeat Method 2.
