How to Get the Toolbar Back in Google Docs

If the toolbar or menus disappeared in Google Docs, press Ctrl + Shift + F (Command + Shift + F on a Mac). That turns off compact mode and brings the menu bar back. You can also click the small Show the menus arrow (⌄) in the top-right corner. If the whole screen shows only the document, you’re in full-screen mode; press Esc to exit. If the toolbar is there but grayed out, you’re probably in viewing mode or have view-only access.

Fix 1: Turn off compact mode

Compact mode hides the menu bar (File, Edit, View, and so on) to give the document more room. It’s easy to turn on by accident with the keyboard shortcut.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + F on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command + Shift + F on a Mac.
  2. Or click the ⌄ arrow at the far right of the toolbar, labeled Show the menus.

The menus reappear right away. Pressing the shortcut again hides them.

Fix 2: Exit full-screen mode

Full screen hides the toolbar, menus, and title.

  1. Press Esc.
  2. If that doesn’t work, press F11 in Chrome or Edge on Windows to leave the browser’s full-screen mode.

To use full screen on purpose later, go to View > Full screen.

Fix 3: Switch to Editing mode

If the toolbar is visible but formatting buttons are missing or gray, check the mode button near the top-right corner (it shows a pencil, a suggestion icon, or an eye).

  • Editing shows the full toolbar.
  • Suggesting keeps the toolbar but records your changes as suggestions.
  • Viewing hides most editing tools. Switch to Editing to get them back.

If Editing isn’t available, you only have view or comment access. Select Request edit access or ask the document’s owner to change your permission.

Fix 4: Make the window wider or reset the zoom

When the browser window is narrow or zoomed in, Google Docs moves some toolbar buttons into the More (three-dot) menu at the end of the toolbar. Maximize the window, or press Ctrl + 0 (Command + 0 on a Mac) to reset the browser zoom.

Fix 5: Rule out browser problems

  • Reload the page with Ctrl + R (Command + R).
  • Try an incognito or private window. If the toolbar appears there, a browser extension is interfering. Turn extensions off one at a time to find it.
  • Clear the browser’s cache for Google sites, then sign in again.
  • Update the browser. Google Docs supports current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.

On a phone or tablet

The Google Docs app doesn’t have the desktop toolbar. Tap the pencil icon to start editing, and the formatting options appear above the keyboard or under the Format (A) icon. To see the desktop version, use a computer’s browser.
