Steps
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Allow Windows to download and install applicable updates.
- Review optional updates only when you have a reason to install a listed driver or component.
- Restart the PC when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional applicable updates are offered.
- Open View update history when you need to confirm what installed or investigate a failure.
Up to date does not mean supported
A message saying the PC is up to date only means Windows Update has no additional updates currently applicable to that installation. It does not restore standard lifecycle support.
Extended servicing varies
Some Windows 10 systems can receive updates through specific Extended Security Updates or organization servicing arrangements. Eligibility and duration depend on Microsoft’s current program terms.
Do not use third-party update packs
Unofficial patch bundles can contain modified system files or malware. Obtain Windows servicing through Microsoft or an authorized organization-management channel.
Plan the migration
If the hardware supports Windows 11, move to a supported release rather than treating repeated Windows 10 update checks as a long-term security strategy.
