In most cases, you can’t turn off two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on an iPhone. Apple requires it for accounts created on iOS 10.3 or later, and once it has been on for more than two weeks, it can’t be turned off. If you turned it on within the last two weeks, you can go back to your previous security settings by clicking the link in the confirmation email Apple sent you. For other apps and services, like Google or Instagram, you turn off two-factor authentication in that app’s own security settings.
Two-factor authentication protects your photos, messages, and payment information, so keeping it on is strongly recommended. Here’s what you can change instead.
Can you turn off Apple Account two-factor authentication?
| Situation | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|
| Turned on within the last 14 days | Yes, using the link in Apple’s enrollment email |
| On for more than 14 days | No |
| Account created on iOS 10.3, macOS 10.12.4, or later | No |
Where to find the setting on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Sign-In & Security (called Password & Security on older versions).
- Check that Two-Factor Authentication shows On.

Make two-factor authentication easier instead
- Add a trusted phone number: In Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication, tap Add a Trusted Phone Number. Add a family member’s number as a backup.
- Remove old devices: In Settings, tap your name and scroll to the device list. Remove devices you no longer use.
- Set up a recovery contact: In Sign-In & Security > Account Recovery, add someone who can help you get back in.
- Use passkeys: Many apps and sites now let you sign in with Face ID or Touch ID, which is fast and secure.
How to turn off two-factor authentication for other apps
- Google Account: Open the Google app or myaccount.google.com > Security > 2-Step Verification > Turn off.
- Instagram: Settings and activity > Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication.
- Microsoft account: account.microsoft.com > Security > Advanced security options.
Some work, school, and banking accounts require two-factor authentication and won’t let you turn it off.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Apple make two-factor authentication permanent?
Some newer features, like iCloud Keychain and Apple Pay, depend on it. It also makes it much harder for someone else to access your account.
What if I lose access to my trusted devices?
Use a trusted phone number, a recovery contact, a recovery key, or Apple’s account recovery process at iforgot.apple.com.
Can I stop getting verification codes on my iPhone?
You’ll only be asked for codes when signing in on a new device or browser. Trusted devices don’t need them every time.
Is two-factor authentication the same as two-step verification?
For Apple, no. Two-step verification is an older method that Apple no longer offers for new accounts.
