If your Word document suddenly looks different, with no page edges, giant text, a dark reading screen, or symbols everywhere, it’s usually just in a different view. In current versions of Word, the “normal” editing view most people expect is Print Layout, which shows each page as it will print, with margins, headers, and footers. Getting back to it takes one click, and this guide also covers the other things that can make a document look “wrong.”
Quick Answer
Go to View > Print Layout, then click 100% in the Zoom group. If you see ¶ symbols and dots, press Ctrl + Shift + 8 to hide formatting marks. If the document is in a full-screen reading view, press Esc.
How to Switch to Print Layout
Step 1: Open the View tab
Click View on the ribbon. If the ribbon is hidden, press Ctrl + F1 or double-click any tab name to show it again.
Step 2: Click Print Layout
In the Views group on the left, click Print Layout. Your document now shows separate pages with margins.
Use the status bar shortcut
At the bottom-right corner of the Word window, next to the zoom slider, there are small view buttons. The middle one (a page icon) is Print Layout. Click it to switch instantly.
Keyboard shortcut
On Windows, press Ctrl + Alt + P to switch to Print Layout. On a Mac, use the View menu or the status bar buttons.
The Views in Word Explained
- Print Layout: The standard editing view. Shows pages, margins, headers, footers, and images in position.
- Read Mode: A full-screen view designed for reading, with columns and no ribbon. Press Esc or choose View > Edit Document to leave it.
- Web Layout: Shows the document as a web page, with text wrapping to the window width and no page breaks.
- Outline: Shows headings as a collapsible outline. Click Close Outline View to exit.
- Draft: A simplified view without headers, footers, or page edges. Older versions of Word called this “Normal” view, which is why people still search for “normal view.”
- Focus: Hides the ribbon and other tools so you can concentrate. Press Esc to exit.
Other Reasons Your Document Looks Different
The zoom changed
If pages look tiny or huge, click View > 100%, or hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel to adjust. You can also drag the zoom slider in the bottom-right corner.
Formatting marks are showing
Dots between words and ¶ at the end of paragraphs are formatting marks. Click Show/Hide ¶ on the Home tab or press Ctrl + Shift + 8 to hide them. See how to show spaces in Word for what each mark means.
White space between pages is hidden
If pages run together with just a line between them, Word is hiding the white space at the top and bottom of pages. Double-click the line between two pages to show it again. See how to hide or show white space in Print Layout.
The page is dark
Word may be using a dark theme. On the View tab, look for Switch Modes to toggle the page color, or change the Office theme in File > Account > Office Theme.
The ribbon is collapsed
Press Ctrl + F1, or click the small arrow at the right end of the ribbon and choose Always show Ribbon.
Comments or Track Changes are showing
If colored text and balloons appear, Track Changes markup is visible. On the Review tab, change the display to No Markup or Simple Markup to see the clean document (this doesn’t accept or delete the changes).
Make Word Open in Print Layout Every Time
If Word keeps opening attachments in Read Mode, go to File > Options > General and uncheck Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view. Documents downloaded from the internet may also open in Protected View; click Enable Editing if you trust the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Normal view in Word?
It’s now called Draft view. Most people actually want Print Layout, which is Word’s default editing view.
Will changing the view change my document?
No. Views only change how the document is displayed, not its content or formatting.
Why can’t I click Print Layout?
If the button is grayed out, the document may be in Protected View or opened as read-only. Click Enable Editing in the yellow bar, or save a copy you can edit.
Does Word for the web have Print Layout?
Word for the web opens in an editing view by default. Use the View tab there to switch between Editing view and Reading view.
Summary
To get a Word document back to normal, click View > Print Layout (or press Ctrl + Alt + P), set the zoom to 100%, press Esc to leave Read Mode or Focus, and hide formatting marks with Ctrl + Shift + 8.
