To turn on the keyboard light on a Lenovo laptop running Windows 11, press Fn + Spacebar. On most Lenovo IdeaPad, Yoga, ThinkPad, and ThinkBook models, each press cycles through low, high, and off. If your Spacebar shows a small light icon, that’s the backlight key. You can also control the backlight in the Lenovo Vantage app under Device > Input & Accessories. Legion gaming laptops use their own lighting controls in Lenovo Vantage or Legion Space.
If nothing happens, your model may not have a backlit keyboard, or a driver or setting may be missing. Here’s how to check.
Method 1: Fn + Spacebar
- Hold down the Fn key (bottom-left, next to Ctrl).
- Press the Spacebar once for low brightness.
- Press again for high, and again to turn it off.
On some ThinkPads with an FnLock light, pressing Fn + Esc first can change how the Fn key behaves. Some models show an on-screen indicator when you change the level.
Method 2: Lenovo Vantage
- Open Lenovo Vantage from the Start menu, or install it from the Microsoft Store.
- Go to Device > Input & Accessories.
- Under Keyboard backlight, choose Low, High, Auto (on some models), or Off.
Some models also let you set the backlight to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity.
Legion and RGB keyboards
Lenovo Legion laptops with RGB lighting use Fn + Spacebar for brightness and effects, and Lenovo Vantage or Legion Space for colors and zones. Windows 11 may also offer Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting for compatible devices.
Keyboard light not working?
- Check if your model has a backlight: Look up your model on Lenovo’s support site, or check for a light icon on the Spacebar. Many budget models don’t have one.
- Install hotkey drivers: Download Lenovo Hotkey Features or the Vantage service from Lenovo’s support site, or run Windows Update optional updates.
- Update the BIOS: Use Lenovo Vantage to check for firmware updates.
- Ambient light sensor: On models with Auto mode, the light may stay off in bright rooms. Switch to Low or High.
- Restart the laptop after installing drivers.
