The legitimate way to remove the Activate Windows watermark is to activate Windows with a valid digital license or product key. Watermark-removal scripts and registry tricks do not grant a license and can damage or weaken the system.
Steps
- Open the Windows Activation settings page.
- Read the activation status and any displayed error code.
- If you own a valid key for the installed edition, use Change product key.
- If the PC should have a digital license, sign into the associated Microsoft account and use the Activation troubleshooter when available.
- If Windows Home or Pro does not match the license you own, resolve the edition mismatch using Microsoft’s supported licensing path.
- For a work or school PC, contact the administrator when activation is organization-managed.
Edition matters
A Windows Home license does not activate Windows Pro. Verify the installed edition before buying another key or repeatedly entering a key that was issued for a different edition.
