“Product Activation Failed” in Microsoft Word means Office can’t confirm you have a valid license. The most common fix is to sign in with the right account: open Word, click File > Account, and make sure you’re signed in with the Microsoft account or work or school account that owns your Microsoft 365 or Office license. Then close all Office apps and reopen Word. If that doesn’t work, check that your subscription is active, remove extra copies of Office, and run a repair.
While the error is showing, Word may open in reduced-functionality mode, where you can view and print documents but not edit them. None of the fixes below delete your documents.

Fix 1: Sign in with the account that owns the license
- Open Word and click File > Account (or Office Account).
- Check the account under User Information. If it’s wrong, click Switch account or Sign out, then sign in with the account you used to buy Office or the one your work or school gave you.
- Under Product Information, click Activate Product if you see it, and follow the prompts.
- Close every Office app (Word, Excel, Outlook, and so on) and open Word again.
Not sure which account has the license? Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with each account you use. The one that lists Microsoft 365 or your Office version is the right one.
Fix 2: Make sure your subscription is active
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
- Check that your Microsoft 365 subscription shows as active, and update your payment method if a payment failed.
- For a one-time purchase like Office 2021 or 2024, make sure it appears under Services & subscriptions.
After you renew or fix payment, restart Word. It can take a few minutes for the license to update.
Fix 3: Remove extra copies of Office
Many new PCs come with a trial version of Microsoft 365. If you install a different version, like Office 2021, the two can conflict and cause activation errors.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Apps & features on Windows 10).
- Search for Office and Microsoft 365.
- If you see more than one version, uninstall the one you don’t have a license for.
- Restart your PC and open Word.
Fix 4: Check your date, time, and time zone
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then click Sync now.
- Restart Word.
Fix 5: Repair Office
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, click the three-dot menu (or the app), and choose Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair and click Repair. If the error comes back, run it again and choose Online Repair, which takes longer but fixes more problems.
Fix 6: Free up a device slot
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family let you sign in on a limited number of devices at the same time (currently five per person). If you’ve hit the limit:
- Go to account.microsoft.com and open Devices or your Microsoft 365 subscription page.
- Sign out of Office on devices you no longer use.
- Sign in again on your current PC.
Fix 7: Activate Office that came with your PC
If Word came preinstalled, open it and click Activate when prompted. You’ll be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account, and Office links to that account. If you bought a product key card, go to microsoft.com/setup (or office.com/setup), sign in, and enter the key there.

- Run Microsoft’s troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app in Windows and search for “Office activation.” It walks you through Microsoft’s automated checks.
- Work or school accounts. Your organization assigns licenses. If activation fails, ask your IT department to confirm your account has an Office license.
- Proxy, VPN, or firewall. Turn off a VPN temporarily. Activation needs to reach Microsoft’s servers.
- Contact Microsoft Support from support.microsoft.com if you paid for Office and it still won’t activate.
Avoid “activator” tools or KMS scripts that promise free activation. They’re unlicensed, often bundled with malware, and can cause the very errors you’re trying to fix.
