How to Change Bullet Point Size in Google Docs

Bullet points in Google Docs are sized to match the text next to them, so there’s no “bullet size” setting in the menus. But there’s a simple trick: click a bullet itself, and Docs selects every bullet at that level without selecting the text. Then any change you make, like font size, color, or bold, applies only to the bullets. This guide shows how to make bullets bigger or smaller, change their color and style, and fix bullets that won’t resize.

Quick Answer

Click directly on one of the bullets (not the text). All the bullets in that list level turn blue-highlighted. Then change the font size in the toolbar (use the + and − buttons or type a number). Only the bullets change size; your text stays the same.

Click a bullet to select all bullets at that level (2), then change the font size (1). The list text stays at its original size.

Change Bullet Size on a Computer

  1. Open the document and find your bulleted list.
  2. Click once directly on a bullet symbol. All bullets at the same level in that list are selected (highlighted), and the text isn’t.
  3. In the toolbar, click the + next to the font size to make bullets bigger, or − to make them smaller. You can also click the number and type a size, like 18, then press Enter.
  4. Click anywhere in the document to deselect.

Keyboard option: after selecting the bullets, press Ctrl + Shift + > to increase or Ctrl + Shift + < to decrease the size (Command + Shift on Mac).

Nested lists

Each indent level is selected separately. Click a bullet on the second level to resize just those sub-bullets, so you can make main points bigger than sub-points.

Change Bullet Color, Style, and Weight

With the bullets selected the same way, you can also:

  • Color: Click the Text color (A) button and pick a color.
  • Bold: Press Ctrl + B for heavier bullets.
  • Bullet shape: Click the arrow next to the Bulleted list button in the toolbar and choose a preset style (like arrows, diamonds, or checkmarks).
  • Custom symbol: Go to Format > Bullets & numbering > Bulleted list options > More bullets and choose any symbol or emoji. Resize it with the same bullet-click trick.

Adjust the Space Between Bullet and Text

Bigger bullets can crowd the text. To add space:

  1. Click in the list.
  2. Go to Format > Align & indent > Indentation options.
  3. Increase the Hanging indent (for example, from 0.25″ to 0.35″) and click Apply.

You can also drag the indent markers on the ruler (View > Show ruler). See our guide on aligning bullet points in Google Docs.

On Phones and Tablets

The Google Docs app doesn’t let you select bullets separately. Changing the font size of the list line changes the text and bullet together. For bullet-only sizing, use a browser on a computer, or request the desktop site in your mobile browser.

Troubleshooting

  • Clicking the bullet selects the text too: Click precisely on the bullet symbol, not the space after it. Zoom in if the bullets are small.
  • Only some bullets changed: Lists that were created separately, or at different indent levels, are selected separately. Repeat for each list or level, or use Paint format to copy the styling.
  • New bullets are small again: New items usually inherit the list’s bullet formatting, but pasted items may not. Reselect the bullets and apply the size again.
  • Bullets reset after changing the list style: Choosing a new preset can reset size and color. Apply the style first, then resize.

Summary

  1. Click directly on a bullet to select all bullets at that level.
  2. Change the font size in the toolbar.
  3. Use the same selection to change color or boldness.
  4. Increase the hanging indent if large bullets crowd the text.
