If calls are being blocked or labeled unexpectedly on an iPhone, an installed call-identification or filtering app may be involved. iOS lets compatible apps participate in call identification and blocking, but carrier spam protection, blocked contacts, Focus, and Silence Unknown Callers can produce similar symptoms.
Check call blocking and identification apps
- Open Settings.
- Open the Phone settings area for your iOS version.
- Find Call Blocking & Identification or the current equivalent.
- Review the apps that are allowed to identify or block calls.
- Temporarily turn off a suspected app’s access and test another call.
Check the iPhone’s own blocked list
A number can be blocked directly in iOS independently of any third-party app. Review Blocked Contacts and make sure the caller’s phone number or associated contact information is not listed there.
Silence Unknown Callers is different from blocking
When Silence Unknown Callers is enabled, calls from numbers the iPhone does not recognize can be silenced and sent to voicemail even though they are not on the blocked list. Focus modes and carrier-level spam filtering can also suppress or redirect calls.
Test one change at a time
Disable only one suspected filtering feature, place a controlled test call, and then restore the setting if it was not responsible. Changing several features at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.
If a legitimate caller is still unable to reach you after iPhone filtering is disabled, check your carrier’s spam-protection service or account settings. Some carriers block suspected fraud calls before they reach iOS, so the responsible control may not appear anywhere in the Phone app settings.
