How to Turn On Bluetooth in Windows 11 and 10

Turning on Bluetooth in Windows takes a couple of clicks, either in Settings or in the quick settings panel on the taskbar. The steps differ slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10, so both are covered below, along with what to do when the Bluetooth switch is missing.

Quick answer

Windows 11: Press Windows+A and select the Bluetooth tile, or go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on. Windows 10: Press Windows+A to open Action Center and select Bluetooth, or go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.

Turn on Bluetooth in Windows 11

  1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices in the left pane.
  3. Turn on the Bluetooth switch at the top.

Faster: Press Windows+A (or select the network, volume, and battery icons at the right end of the taskbar) and click the Bluetooth tile so it turns colored. Click the arrow on the tile to see nearby devices and connect straight from there.

Turn on Bluetooth in Windows 10

  1. Press Windows+I to open Settings.
  2. Select Devices, then Bluetooth & other devices.
  3. Turn on the Bluetooth switch.

Faster: Press Windows+A to open Action Center. Select Expand if you only see a few tiles, then click Bluetooth.

Note: Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) now run until October 12, 2027. These steps still work on Windows 10, but upgrading to Windows 11 is the long-term way to keep getting security fixes.

Pair a Bluetooth device

  1. Put the device in pairing mode. For headphones and speakers, this usually means holding the power or Bluetooth button until a light flashes.
  2. Windows 11: in Bluetooth & devices, select Add device > Bluetooth. Windows 10: select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  3. Choose the device from the list and confirm a PIN if one appears.

Many newer devices also support Swift Pair, which shows a pop-up offering to connect as soon as the device is in pairing mode near your PC.

No Bluetooth switch? Try these fixes

What you see Likely cause Fix
No Bluetooth option anywhere The PC has no Bluetooth adapter Many desktops lack one. Add a USB Bluetooth adapter.
Bluetooth missing from Device Manager Adapter disabled in UEFI, or a missing driver Check the PC maker’s driver page and firmware settings
Bluetooth device shows a down arrow Adapter disabled in Windows Right-click it in Device Manager and choose Enable device
Switch turns itself off Airplane mode or power saving Turn off Airplane mode; in the adapter’s Power Management tab, clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
Bluetooth worked, then vanished A stuck driver or service Restart the PC, then reinstall the Bluetooth driver from Device Manager

Also check that the Bluetooth Support Service is running: press Windows+R, type services.msc, and make sure its startup type isn’t Disabled. Windows 11’s troubleshooters are under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

Turn Bluetooth off or remove a device

Use the same switch or tile to turn Bluetooth off when you don’t need it, which saves a little battery on laptops and stops devices from reconnecting. To forget a device you no longer use, open the Bluetooth settings page, select the three dots next to it (Windows 11) or click the device (Windows 10), and choose Remove device. Removing and re-pairing is also one of the most reliable fixes when headphones connect but play no sound or keep dropping.

How to tell if your PC has Bluetooth

Open Device Manager and look for a Bluetooth category. If there isn’t one, also check under Network adapters for a “Bluetooth” entry. Most laptops have built-in Bluetooth; many desktops only have it if the motherboard or Wi-Fi card includes it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a keyboard shortcut for Bluetooth?

Windows doesn’t have a dedicated Bluetooth shortcut. Windows+A opens the panel with the Bluetooth tile, and some laptops have a wireless key that toggles Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together.

Why does Bluetooth turn off after a restart?

Usually because of power-saving settings on the adapter, Airplane mode being on at startup, or an outdated driver. Update the driver from your PC maker.

Can I connect two Bluetooth headphones at once?

Windows plays to one Bluetooth audio device at a time by default. See using two Bluetooth headphones on Windows 11 for workarounds.

How do I rename my PC’s Bluetooth name?

Bluetooth uses your PC’s name. On Windows 10, follow renaming a Bluetooth device in Windows 10.
