How to Find Permanently Closed Places on Google Maps

Google Maps doesn’t have a filter or list for permanently closed places. Closed businesses are hidden when you browse the map, but most are still in Google’s database. To find one, search for it by its exact name, plus the city or street if you know it. If it’s still listed, its place panel shows a red Permanently closed label, along with its old address, photos, and reviews. For places that are no longer listed, Street View’s older imagery can show you what used to be there.

Method 1: Search for the place by name

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone or go to maps.google.com.
  2. In the search bar, type the business’s full name and the city, like Rosie’s Corner Café Springfield.
  3. Choose the result. If it’s closed for good, you’ll see Permanently closed in red under the name.

You can still read reviews, see photos, save the place, and get directions to where it was. Temporarily closed places show Temporarily closed instead.

Method 2: Search Google instead of Maps

If Maps doesn’t show a result, search for the name and city on google.com. The business profile on the right side of the results may still appear with a Permanently closed notice, and clicking the map there opens it in Google Maps.

Method 3: Check your Timeline and saved places

  • Saved lists: If you saved the place, it stays in your lists after it closes. Tap You in the Maps app, or click Menu > Saved on a computer.
  • Timeline: If you have Timeline turned on, you can find past visits by date. In the Maps app, tap your profile picture > Your Timeline. Timeline is stored on your device, so it only goes back as far as you’ve had it on.
  • Your reviews and photos: Tap Contribute or your profile to see places you’ve reviewed. Closed places stay on your profile.

Method 4: Use Street View to see what used to be there

Even if a business was removed from Maps, Street View photos from earlier years may show it.

  1. On a computer, go to the address in Google Maps.
  2. Drag the yellow Pegman figure from the bottom-right corner onto the street.
  3. In the top-left box, click See more dates (or the clock icon).
  4. Pick an older year to see the storefront as it was.

On the Google Maps app, open Street View, then tap the date or See more dates to switch years. Historical imagery isn’t available everywhere.

How to report a place as permanently closed

If a place has closed but Google Maps still shows it as open, you can suggest a change:

  1. Search for the place and open it.
  2. Select Suggest an edit, then Place closed or not here.
  3. Choose Permanently closed and select Submit.

Google reviews suggested edits before they appear. If a place reopened, open it and choose Suggest an edit > Operating status changed > Reopen > Submit.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t closed places show on the map?

Google hides them to keep the map useful for people looking for open businesses. They usually still appear when you search for them by name.

Does Google delete permanently closed places?

Sometimes. Places can be removed if they’re duplicates, never existed, or have been replaced by a new business at the same address. Many closed places stay listed for years, though.

Can I see reviews of a closed restaurant?

Yes, if it’s still listed. Open the place and scroll to the reviews.

Can I find closed places on the Google Maps app?

Yes. Search by name works the same on the app. Street View history works on both, but it’s easier to use on a computer.
