When a friend gets a new number, updating their contact card on your iPhone takes a few taps, and the change syncs to your other Apple devices through iCloud. Change an Existing Number
- Open the Contacts app, or Phone and then the Contacts tab.
- Tap the contact, then Edit at the top right.
- Tap the phone number, delete the old digits (tap the small x in the field), and type the new number.
- Tap Done.
Add a Second Number or Delete an Old One
- Add: in Edit, tap add phone (green plus), type the number, and pick a label.
- Delete: tap the red minus next to the old number, then Delete.
- Change the label: tap the label to the left of the number (such as mobile) and pick iPhone, home, work, or Add Custom Label.
Save a Number From Recents or Messages
- In Phone > Recents, tap the i next to the call.
- Tap Add to Existing Contact, choose the person, and tap Done.
In Messages, tap the number at the top of the conversation, then use Add to Existing Contact.
Update Your Own Number
Your contact card is at the top of Contacts (My Card). Edit it the same way. Your iPhone’s actual number comes from your SIM or eSIM; see Settings > Phone > My Number, which reflects the carrier’s information.
Merge Duplicate Contacts
On iOS 16 and later, Contacts shows Duplicates Found under My Card. Tap View Duplicates > Merge All. To link two cards manually, open one, tap Edit, scroll to link contacts, and choose the other.
If Your Changes Revert or Don’t Sync
- Check which account holds the contact: contacts from Google, Outlook or Exchange sync with that account, and changes may need a moment to upload. Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Accounts (or Settings > Contacts on older iOS).
- iCloud Contacts: make sure Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Contacts is on to sync to your Mac, iPad and iCloud.com.
- Read-only sources: contacts from some work directories can’t be edited on the iPhone.
- Restart the Contacts app or the iPhone if an edit doesn’t stick.
