Windows 11 can extract ordinary ZIP archives directly in File Explorer, so a third-party utility is not required for a basic .zip file.
Steps
- Locate the ZIP file in File Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Extract All.
- Choose the destination folder.
- Select Extract.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Check that the expected files and folders are present and open normally.
- Delete the original ZIP only when you no longer need the compressed copy.
Opening is not the same as extracting
File Explorer can display files inside a ZIP, but some applications and installers work more reliably after the contents have been extracted to a normal folder.
Other archive formats differ
Current Windows 11 builds support more archive formats than older Windows versions, but encrypted, split, or unusual archives can still require a maintained archive utility.
Downloaded archives require caution
A ZIP can contain executable programs, scripts, shortcuts, or malicious documents. Extraction does not make its contents trustworthy; scan unexpected downloads and verify their source.
Extraction errors can indicate damage
If Windows reports that an archive is invalid or incomplete, download it again from the legitimate source when possible. Do not assume installing another extraction program will repair corrupted data.
Choose a sensible destination
Extract large archives to a location with enough free space, because the uncompressed contents can be much larger than the ZIP itself. Avoid extracting directly into protected Windows folders or over an existing project unless you understand which files will be replaced.
