Windows 11 can choose a default printer automatically based on recent use, or you can select one printer yourself. If Windows keeps changing the default, turn off its automatic-management option before setting the printer you prefer.
Set a specific default printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer if that option is enabled.
- Select the printer you want to use most often.
- Choose Set as default.
If Set as default is missing
Windows may still be managing the default automatically, or the printer may not be fully installed. Return to the Printers & scanners page, disable automatic default-printer management, and confirm the device reports a normal ready/installed state.
Default does not mean every app must use it
Applications can remember their own last-used printer or have independent print settings. If one program keeps choosing another device while other apps use the Windows default correctly, inspect that application’s print preferences.
Avoid setting virtual printers by accident
Microsoft Print to PDF, OneNote, fax software, and document-management applications can appear in the same printer list as physical devices. Confirm the model/name before making it the default.
If a network printer frequently goes offline, solve the connection or driver problem instead of repeatedly resetting the default. Use Windows Update, the printer manufacturer’s official driver/support software, or your organization’s print server. On a managed work computer, printer defaults can also be controlled by policy.
