You can choose a preferred printer in Windows 11, but first turn off the option that lets Windows automatically manage the default printer if you want your choice to remain fixed.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer if it is enabled.
- Select the printer you want to use most often.
- Choose Set as default.
- Open a document’s Print dialog and verify that the expected printer is selected.
Why Windows may keep changing it
When automatic management is enabled, Windows can make the most recently used printer at your current location the default. That is useful for some mobile users but confusing when you always want the same printer.
App-specific printer choices
Some applications remember their last printer independently. If one program continues selecting another device, check that application’s print settings instead of repeatedly changing the Windows default.
If Set as default is missing
Confirm automatic printer management is off and that the printer is installed correctly. A disconnected network printer can still appear in Windows, so print a test page if availability is uncertain.
Default printer and PDF
Microsoft Print to PDF and other virtual printers can also become defaults. If printed jobs unexpectedly create files instead of paper output, check whether a virtual printer was selected rather than assuming the physical printer is offline.
