Reset the HP laptop from Windows
- Connect the laptop to AC power.
- Back up documents, photos, browser data, application files, and anything else you cannot replace.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Next to Reset this PC, choose Reset PC.
- Select Keep my files or Remove everything after reading what each choice removes.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall, review the summary, and continue only when you are comfortable with the selections.
Keep my files does not keep everything
The option is designed to retain personal files while removing installed applications and resetting many Windows settings. You will need to reinstall programs afterward. A separate backup is still important because a reset should never be treated as the only copy of valuable data.
Before resetting an encrypted PC
Make sure you can access the BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key. Firmware changes, recovery operations, or startup problems can trigger a recovery-key request. HP’s hardware diagnostics are also worth running first when crashes, storage errors, or memory problems suggest that the underlying issue may be hardware rather than Windows.
If Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment can provide Reset this PC and other repair options. Try appropriate startup repair or recovery choices before erasing the installation. On a managed work or school HP laptop, contact the administrator instead of resetting a device that may contain organizational data or management software.
