If you own or are authorized to manage a Windows 11 laptop but cannot sign in, Reset this PC can reinstall Windows without bypassing the forgotten password. A factory reset can erase applications and personal data, and BitLocker may require a recovery key.
Try legitimate account recovery first
For a Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s official password/account recovery process. For a work or school laptop, contact the organization’s administrator.
Open Windows Recovery Environment
From the sign-in screen, use the Power menu while holding Shift and choose Restart when that supported path is available. Select Troubleshoot to reach recovery options.
Choose Reset this PC
Select Reset this PC and decide whether to keep personal files or remove everything, if Windows offers those choices. Keeping files still removes applications/settings and is not guaranteed data recovery.
Provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested
Encrypted systems can require the legitimate recovery key before recovery operations. Retrieve it from the appropriate Microsoft/work account or administrator.
Use manufacturer recovery only when appropriate
Some laptops include an OEM recovery environment that returns the device to its factory image. Follow the exact manufacturer’s current instructions and understand what it erases.
Do not use password-bypass utilities, offline registry tricks, or modified boot media to defeat account security. If authorized recovery cannot preserve needed files, professional data recovery may be appropriate before a destructive reset.
Understand Keep my files limitations
The option is designed to preserve files in standard user-profile locations, not every custom folder or application database. If the data is irreplaceable and you cannot verify a backup, do not assume a reset will preserve it.
Stop before transferring ownership
If the reset is for sale or donation rather than account recovery, choose the appropriate Remove everything/data-cleaning options and stop at Windows setup after completion. Do not create a new account for the next owner.
