On Android, Google can save your Instagram username and password and fill them in automatically, or even sign you back in after you log out. This used to be called Smart Lock for Passwords; today it’s part of Google Password Manager, but many people still know it as Smart Lock. If you share a phone, switched Instagram accounts, or just don’t want your login saved, you can delete the saved Instagram entry and stop Google from offering it again.
Why Instagram Keeps Signing You In
Two features are usually responsible:
- Saved passwords: Google Password Manager stores your Instagram login and offers it on the sign-in screen.
- Auto sign-in: When turned on, Google signs you in to supported apps automatically using saved credentials.
Instagram can also remember your login on its own, which is a separate setting covered below.
Method 1: Delete the Saved Instagram Password
On your Android phone
- Open Settings and go to Google (on some phones, Passwords & accounts or Passwords, passkeys & autofill).
- Open Autofill > Autofill with Google > Google Password Manager, or search Settings for “Password Manager.”
- Find Instagram in the list and tap it.
- Verify it’s you with your screen lock if asked.
- Tap Delete and confirm.
From a computer
Go to passwords.google.com, sign in with the same Google account, click the Instagram entry, and choose Delete. Changes sync to your phone.
Method 2: Turn Off Auto Sign-In
Deleting the password removes the saved login, but if you’d like Google to stop signing you into apps automatically in general:
- Open Google Password Manager using the steps above.
- Tap the settings (gear) icon.
- Turn off Auto sign-in.
With this off, Google will ask before using a saved password.
Method 3: Stop Google from Offering to Save Instagram Again
When Google asks to save your password after you log in to Instagram, tap Never. That adds Instagram to the list of apps Google won’t offer to save passwords for. You can review this list in Password Manager settings, usually under Declined sites and apps.
To stop Google from offering to save passwords anywhere, turn off Offer to save passwords in the same settings screen.
Method 4: Remove Saved Login Info in Instagram
Instagram can remember your login on the device even without Google. To clear it:
- Open Instagram, go to your profile, and tap the menu (three lines).
- Open Accounts Center > Password and security.
- Look for Saved login and remove or turn off the saved login for this device.
Then log out. On the login screen, if your account still appears, tap the three dots next to it and choose Remove. Menu names can vary as Instagram updates its app.
Method 5: Clear Instagram’s App Data
If the account still shows up, go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage and tap Clear storage (or Clear data). This resets the app as if it were newly installed. You’ll need to log in again to any accounts you want to keep.
If You Have More Than One Google Account
Passwords are saved to a specific Google account. If you don’t see Instagram in Password Manager, switch accounts using your profile picture at the top of the Password Manager screen and check each one. What About iPhone?
On an iPhone, Instagram logins are usually saved in Apple’s Passwords app or iCloud Keychain rather than Google. Open Settings > Passwords (or the Passwords app), find Instagram, and delete the entry. If you set Google Password Manager as an autofill provider on your iPhone, delete it there too.

- Shared phone? Use a separate Android user profile or guest mode so logins aren’t shared.
- Changed your password? Update the saved password in Google Password Manager instead of deleting it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in Instagram for extra protection if someone else might access your phone.

Is Smart Lock the same as Google Password Manager?
Smart Lock for Passwords was folded into Google Password Manager. Phone “Smart Lock” settings that keep your screen unlocked (like trusted places) are a different feature.
Will deleting the password log me out of Instagram?
No. It only removes the saved credentials. You stay logged in until you sign out.
