Canva notes on its supported download file types page that PPTX files may look different once opened in another program, and that animations and embedded videos may not play as expected. Plan to review the slides after conversion.

Step 2: Open the File as a Google Slides Presentation

Before you upload, keep the original Canva design. It’s your backup if anything goes wrong in the conversion.

  1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click New at the top left, then click File upload, as described in Google’s guide to uploading files to Google Drive. You can also drag the PPTX file into the Drive window.
  3. Select the PPTX file from your Downloads folder. Expected result: An upload panel shows progress at the bottom right, and the file appears in Drive.
  4. Double-click the file. Expected result: A preview opens.
  5. At the top, click Open with Google Slides. Expected result: The presentation opens in the Google Slides editor.
  6. Check the file name bar. If it still shows a .PPTX label, the file is being edited in its PowerPoint format, and changes save back to that Office file. To make a true Google Slides copy, open the File menu and choose Save as Google Slides if you see that option.

Add Canva Slides to an Existing Google Slides Deck

If you already have a Google Slides presentation and want to drop in a few slides designed in Canva, use Import slides. You still need the PPTX file from Step 1.

  1. Open the Google Slides presentation you want to add slides to.
  2. Click File, then Import slides.
  3. Choose a presentation from Drive, or click the Upload tab and select the PPTX file from your computer.
  4. Click Select. Expected result: Thumbnails of every slide in the file appear.
  5. Click the slides you want to import, or choose to select all slides.
  6. Decide on the theme. Check Keep original theme to bring the Canva slides in exactly as designed. Leave it unchecked to have them adopt your current presentation’s theme.

Alternative: Insert Slides as Images

If the design has to look exactly like it does in Canva, and you won’t need to edit the text in Google Slides, turn each slide into an image. This avoids font and layout problems, but everything on the slide becomes a flat picture.

  1. In Canva, click Share, then Download.
  2. Set File type to PNG (sharper text and graphics) or JPG (smaller files). Choose All pages.
  3. Click Download. If Canva delivers the images in a ZIP folder, open or extract it to get one image per slide.

What Changes in the Conversion (and How to Fix It)

Canva and Google Slides use different design engines, so a converted presentation rarely comes through perfectly. Here’s what to check.

  • Fonts. Many Canva fonts aren’t available in Google Slides, so Slides substitutes a similar font. That can make text wider or narrower, causing overflow or odd line breaks. Fix it by choosing a matching font from Google Slides’ font list; see how to add fonts to Google Slides.
  • Animations and transitions. Canva states that animations aren’t supported in PPTX downloads. Re-create them in Google Slides using its animation and transition tools (look for Animation under the Insert menu and a Transition option for slides; labels can vary slightly).
  • Videos and audio. Embedded videos may not play. Google also notes that embedded charts and videos in PowerPoint files are converted to images when you convert them to Google Slides, according to its guide to working with Office files. Re-insert videos with Insert, then Video.
  • Charts and SmartArt-style graphics. Charts become static images, so the underlying numbers can no longer be edited. Rebuild important charts in Google Slides or Google Sheets.
  • Spacing and alignment. Text boxes can shift slightly. Use the arrange and align tools to tidy them up.
  • Effects, frames and grouped elements. Some Canva effects, photo frames and complex groups may flatten into images or lose effects.
  • Speaker notes. Canva’s help pages confirm notes can be included in PDF downloads, but don’t document whether they carry into PPTX. Check your notes after conversion and copy them over if they’re missing.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see a PowerPoint option in Canva’s File type menu

PPTX downloads work for presentation designs only. If your design is another type, copy its pages into a new Canva presentation, or use the image method instead.

The upload or conversion fails

Google Slides presentations can be up to 100 MB. Large, image-heavy Canva decks can exceed that. Try downloading with a smaller size or quality setting in Canva, splitting the deck into two files, or compressing images before export.

Text overflows its boxes after conversion

This is almost always a font substitution. Select the text, change it to a Google Slides font close to the original, and reduce the size slightly if needed.

Imported slides look off-center or cropped

The slide size may not match. Check File, then Page setup in Google Slides, and set it to the same shape as your Canva design (many Canva presentation templates use a 16:9 widescreen layout).

There’s a watermark on my slides
