MOV is a QuickTime container, not a single video codec. Windows can open many MOV files with current media players, but playback depends on the video and audio codecs inside the file.
How to do it
- Double-click the .mov file and try the current Windows media player first.
- If it does not play, right-click > Open with and try a reputable player that supports the file’s codecs.
- For HEVC video, install the legitimate codec support required by your Windows setup if the player reports that codec is missing.
- If you need broad compatibility, convert a copy to MP4 using a trusted converter such as HandBrake, choosing H.264/AAC when appropriate.
- Keep the original MOV until you confirm the converted file has the expected picture, sound, resolution, and frame rate.
Why some MOV files fail
Two files ending in .mov can contain completely different codecs. Professional cameras and iPhones may create HEVC, high-bit-depth, HDR, or other media that older hardware cannot decode smoothly. A corrupt or incomplete file will not be fixed simply by renaming its extension.

If only the audio is missing, the video codec may be fine while the audio stream uses an unsupported format. Media-information tools can identify streams without converting them.
