Voice Memos Not Playing on iPhone 14? 11 Fixes

You tap play on a voice memo and nothing happens, or the timeline moves but you hear no sound. On an iPhone 14, this is almost always caused by audio routing, volume, iCloud syncing, or a recording that didn’t save properly. The fixes below start with the quickest checks and work up to the bigger ones.

Quick answer

Turn the volume up while the memo is playing, disconnect Bluetooth headphones, and tap the speaker button in Voice Memos so audio comes out of the loudspeaker. If the memo shows a cloud icon, wait for it to download over Wi-Fi. If none of that works, restart the iPhone and update iOS.

1. Check the volume during playback

The iPhone has separate volume levels for the ringer and for media. Voice memos use the media volume, so a loud ringer doesn’t mean the memo will be audible. Start playing the memo, then press the volume up button a few times. You should see the volume indicator move on screen.

You can also open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner and drag the volume slider up while the memo plays.

2. Switch the audio to the speaker

Voice Memos can route playback through the small earpiece at the top of the phone instead of the main loudspeaker. That makes it sound like nothing is playing unless you hold the phone to your ear.

  1. Open Voice Memos and tap the recording.
  2. Look for the speaker (audio output) button near the playback controls.
  3. Tap it and choose Speaker or iPhone, depending on what’s listed.

Also avoid covering the top of the screen while playing. The proximity sensor can switch audio to the earpiece if it thinks the phone is at your ear.

3. Disconnect Bluetooth devices

If AirPods, a car stereo, or a Bluetooth speaker is connected, the memo may be playing there. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn it off briefly, or pick your iPhone as the output from the AirPlay icon in Control Center. Then try the memo again.

4. Make sure the memo has downloaded from iCloud

When Voice Memos syncs with iCloud, older recordings may only exist in the cloud until you open them. A recording that hasn’t downloaded yet won’t play.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and wait a moment after tapping the memo.
  • Check Settings > [your name] > iCloud and confirm Voice Memos is turned on.
  • If you’re low on iCloud storage, syncing can stall. Free up space or upgrade your plan.

5. Check that the recording actually saved

Look at the length shown under the memo’s name. If it says 0:00 or only a second or two, the recording failed, often because another app was using the microphone or the recording was interrupted by a call. There’s no audio to play in that case. If many new recordings come out empty, see our guide to fixing an iPhone 14 microphone that isn’t working.

6. Close and reopen Voice Memos

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to open the app switcher. Swipe the Voice Memos card up to close it, then open the app again. This clears temporary glitches in the player.

7. Restart your iPhone 14

  1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider and wait 30 seconds.
  3. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

8. Update iOS

Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update. Voice Memos is a built-in app, so bug fixes for it arrive through iOS updates.

9. Test the file in another app

To find out whether the problem is the app or the recording, tap the three dots on the memo, choose Share, and pick Save to Files. Then open the file in the Files app and play it. If it plays there, the recording is fine and the problem is the Voice Memos app. If it’s silent everywhere, the audio itself is missing or damaged. Saving memos elsewhere is a good habit too, for example by uploading voice memos to Google Drive.

10. Delete and reinstall Voice Memos

Make sure your recordings are synced to iCloud or saved elsewhere first. Then press and hold the Voice Memos icon, choose Remove App, and Delete App. Reinstall it from the App Store and let your memos sync back down.

11. Reset all settings

As a last step, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This resets audio, Bluetooth, and network settings without deleting your data or recordings. You’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward.

If memos still won’t play after all of this, and other audio such as music or videos is also silent, the speaker may have a hardware problem. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I hear my voice memo only when I hold the phone to my ear?

Playback is going through the earpiece. Tap the speaker button in Voice Memos and select the speaker as the output.

Does the silent switch mute voice memos?

Generally no. The Ring/Silent switch on the iPhone 14 mutes ringtones and alerts, but media playback still uses the media volume. Turn the volume up during playback.

Where do deleted voice memos go?

They move to the Recently Deleted folder in Voice Memos for about 30 days, where you can recover them. Learn more in our guide to deleting a voice memo on an iPhone.
