Discord can launch automatically when you sign in to Windows 11. You can disable that behavior either in Discord or through Windows’ Startup apps controls without uninstalling Discord.
Steps
- Open Discord and select User Settings.
- Find the Windows or startup settings.
- Turn off the option that opens Discord when the computer starts.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > Startup in Windows.
- Turn Discord off in the Startup list.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to confirm Discord no longer opens automatically.
Discord remains installed
Disabling startup only stops automatic launch. You can still open Discord normally from Start, the taskbar, or another shortcut whenever you need it.
Check Task Manager if it returns
Task Manager’s Startup apps section can reveal another Discord entry or updater. Disable only entries you recognize rather than deleting program files manually.
Updates can change application settings
If Discord begins opening at startup again after an update or reinstall, revisit both Discord’s own Windows settings and the Windows Startup apps list.
Startup cleanup can improve sign-in
Stopping unnecessary apps from launching can reduce background activity after login, especially on systems with limited memory. Leave security, accessibility, synchronization, or organization-required startup software enabled unless you understand its purpose.
Closing Discord is not the same as disabling startup
Exiting Discord from its tray icon stops the current session, but it does not necessarily change what happens at the next Windows sign-in. Use the startup setting when you want the behavior to remain disabled after future restarts.
