You arrange your desktop icons just the way you like them, and the next time you restart, connect a monitor, or open a game, they’ve jumped back to the left side of the screen or shuffled into a new order. Windows 11 doesn’t have a “lock icons” button, but a few settings control how icons are arranged, and most cases of moving icons come from one of a handful of causes. With Auto arrange on, Windows pushes every icon into columns starting from the top-left corner, so anything you place elsewhere snaps back. Once it’s off, you can drag icons anywhere.
Step 2: Decide on Align icons to grid
In the same View menu, Align icons to grid snaps icons to invisible spacing so they line up neatly. Leaving it on keeps the desktop tidy and doesn’t cause icons to move on its own. Turn it off only if you want to place icons at exact spots, such as overlapping a wallpaper design.
Step 3: Avoid sorting the desktop
Right-clicking the desktop and choosing Sort by (Name, Size, Item type, or Date modified) rearranges every icon immediately. If you use Sort by out of habit, skip it once your layout is set.

- Click Desktop icon settings.

Why icons move after a restart or a monitor change
Resolution and scaling changes
Windows remembers icon positions for the current screen size. When the resolution or Scale setting changes, such as when a game runs at a lower resolution, you connect to a projector, or a driver resets the display, icons that no longer fit are moved. Check Settings > System > Display and use the recommended resolution and the same scale every time.
Multiple monitors and docks
Laptops that connect and disconnect from external monitors are especially prone to this. When the main display changes, icons are moved to fit. Setting the same monitor as your main display each time (in Display settings, select it and check Make this my main display) helps keep positions stable.
Graphics driver issues
If the screen briefly flickers or goes black at startup, the display may be resetting, which reshuffles icons. Update your graphics driver through Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates or your graphics maker’s app.
OneDrive desktop syncing
If OneDrive backs up your Desktop folder, files added on another PC can appear on your desktop and push icons around. You can manage this in OneDrive settings under Sync and back up > Manage back up.
