To set a Google Photos picture as your wallpaper on an iPhone or iPad, first save it to your device: open the photo in the Google Photos app, tap the More (three dots) button or Share, and choose Save to device (or Download). Then open the Apple Photos app, open the saved picture, tap Share, and choose Use as Wallpaper. Adjust the crop, tap Add or Done, and choose whether to use it on the Lock Screen, Home Screen, or both.
Google Photos can’t set wallpapers directly on iOS and iPadOS, because only Apple’s Settings and Photos apps can change the wallpaper. Step 1: Save the photo from Google Photos to your device
- Open the Google Photos app and tap the photo you want.
- Tap the More button (three dots) or swipe up on the photo.
- Tap Save to device or Download. If the photo is already on your device, this option won’t appear, and you can skip to Step 2.
- If asked, allow Google Photos to add photos to your library.
You can also tap Share and choose Save Image from the iOS share sheet, depending on your app version.
Step 2: Set it as your wallpaper from the Photos app
- Open the Apple Photos app and find the saved picture (usually at the bottom of Recents, or in Library).
- Tap the picture, then tap the Share button (a square with an up arrow).
- Scroll down and tap Use as Wallpaper.
- Pinch and drag to position the photo. On iOS 16 and later, you can swipe to try filters like Black & White or Duotone, and change the clock style.
- Tap Add (or Done), then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens, or Customize Home Screen to use a different Home Screen background.
Alternative: Set it from Settings
- Open Settings > Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper and choose Photos.
- Pick the saved picture, adjust it, and tap Add.
On iOS 16 and later, you can also touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap +, and choose Photos.
Use several Google Photos pictures with Photo Shuffle
- Save the pictures you want from Google Photos to your device (select several and tap Share > Save to device, if available).
- In Apple Photos, add them to a new album.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap +, and choose Photo Shuffle.
- Choose Select Photos Manually or pick the album, set how often it changes (on tap, on wake, hourly, or daily), and tap Add.
Make the photo fit your screen
- Use a portrait photo – vertical photos fit the screen better than landscape ones.
- Crop first – in Google Photos, tap Edit > Crop and choose a 9:16 or phone-shaped ratio before saving a copy.
- Choose high resolution – if the photo looks blurry, it may be a low-resolution version. Google Photos backed up at Storage saver quality is compressed, but usually still sharp enough for a phone screen.
- Perspective Zoom – on older iOS versions, turn it off in the wallpaper preview if the photo looks too zoomed in.
iPad notes
The steps are the same on iPad. Because iPads rotate, pick a photo with the main subject in the center so it looks good in both portrait and landscape.
Troubleshooting
- No “Save to device” option – the photo is already on your device, or it’s in a shared album you don’t own. Try Share > Save Image, or add the shared photo to your library first.
- No “Use as Wallpaper” in the share sheet – make sure you’re sharing from the Apple Photos app, and scroll to the bottom of the list. Live Photos and some videos may show different options.
- Google Photos can’t save to your library – go to Settings > Apps > Google Photos (or Settings > Google Photos) > Photos and allow Full Access or Add Photos Only.
- Wallpaper looks dark – check whether Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper is on in Settings > Wallpaper, or whether a Focus is dimming the Lock Screen.

Can I use a video from Google Photos as wallpaper?
