Windows 10 does not include a universal built-in EPUB reader in the way older versions of Microsoft Edge once did. To open an EPUB ebook now, install a reputable reader application or use a browser/web service that explicitly supports EPUB files.
Open an EPUB with a reader app
- Choose a trusted EPUB reader that supports your Windows version.
- Download it from the Microsoft Store or the developer’s official site.
- Install and open the reader.
- Use its Open or Import command and select the .epub file.
- If you want that reader to open EPUB files automatically, set it as the default app for the .epub file type.
Be cautious with unknown ebook files
An EPUB is essentially a packaged collection of web-style content and metadata. Treat ebooks from unknown download sites as untrusted files. Keep the reader and operating system updated, and avoid applications that ask you to disable security software simply to open a book.
DRM-protected books may require a specific app
Ebooks purchased from a store can use digital rights management. A general EPUB reader may be unable to open that file even though the extension is .epub. Use the retailer, publisher, library, or lending service’s supported application and account process rather than trying to strip protection.
Convert only when necessary
If a device or application requires another format, use a reputable conversion tool and keep a copy of the original. Conversion can alter fonts, page breaks, tables, and other formatting.
Windows 10 ended regular support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends Windows 11 for eligible PCs or an applicable ESU option during transition.
