Windows 11 can keep a laptop running after its lid is closed by changing the lid-close power action. This is useful for a docked desk setup, but it also means closing the lid no longer guarantees the computer will sleep.
Steps
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Choose Choose what closing the lid does.
- Set When I close the lid to Do nothing for Plugged in, On battery, or both according to your needs.
- Save the changes.
- Connect the external monitor or peripherals you need and test the lid behavior.
Plugged-in and battery settings can differ
For a desk setup, setting Plugged in to Do nothing may be sufficient while leaving the battery action at Sleep. That helps prevent an unplugged laptop from running unnoticed and draining its battery.
Do not put a running laptop in a bag
If closing the lid does nothing, the computer can remain active and generate heat in a backpack, sleeve, or other poorly ventilated space. Put it to sleep or shut it down before packing it away.
Check ventilation with the lid closed
Some laptop designs use airflow around the keyboard or perform differently in closed-lid operation. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and monitor temperatures during demanding workloads.
Managed power policies can override the setting
Work or school computers may enforce power behavior through organization policy. If the setting is unavailable or keeps changing back, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
