How to Edit a Google Form After Submitting (Responses and Questions)

“Editing a Google Form after submitting” can mean two things: letting people change their answers after they click Submit, or changing the form itself after responses have started coming in. Both are possible. This guide covers each, including how respondents find their edit link, what happens to existing responses when you change questions, and how to fix common problems.

Quick Answer

To let respondents change their answers, open the form, click Settings, expand Responses, and turn on Allow response editing. After submitting, respondents see an Edit your response link. To change the form itself, just open it and edit the questions; your changes apply to new responses, and existing responses are kept.

(1) Open Settings, then (2) turn on Allow response editing under Responses.

Part 1: Let Respondents Edit Their Answers

  1. Open the form in Google Forms (forms.google.com or from Google Drive).
  2. Click the Settings tab at the top.
  3. Click the arrow next to Responses to expand it.
  4. Turn on Allow response editing. Settings save automatically.

The setting applies to responses already submitted as well as new ones.

How Respondents Edit a Submitted Response

  • Right after submitting: click Edit your response on the confirmation page, change answers, and submit again.
  • Later: the edit link on the confirmation page is unique to that response, so it’s worth bookmarking. If the form requires sign-in or limits people to one response, reopening the form while signed in to the same Google Account usually brings up the existing response to edit.
  • From a receipt: if you turn on Collect email addresses and set Send responders a copy of their response, respondents get an email with their answers, and the email can include an edit option when editing is allowed.

Part 2: Edit the Form After Responses Are In

  1. Open the form and stay on the Questions tab.
  2. Click any question to change its wording, options, or required status. Use the icons to add, duplicate, or delete questions.
  3. Changes save automatically and appear to anyone who opens the form afterward.

What Happens to Existing Responses

  • Adding a question: earlier responses show a blank for it.
  • Rewording a question: earlier answers stay attached to it, so change meaning carefully.
  • Deleting a question: its answers disappear from the Responses summary in Forms, but a linked Google Sheet keeps the column. Link a sheet first (Responses > Link to Sheets) if you might need that data.
  • Changing multiple-choice options: answers that no longer match an option still appear in individual responses.

Stop or Pause Responses While You Edit

To avoid collecting answers to a half-edited form, go to the Responses tab and turn off Accepting responses. You can add a custom message for anyone who opens the form. Turn it back on when you’re done.

Can the Form Owner Edit Someone’s Response?

Google Forms doesn’t offer a button for owners to edit another person’s submitted answers. Common workarounds are to correct the data in the linked Google Sheet (which doesn’t change the response stored in Forms), ask the respondent to use their edit link, or, for advanced users, use Google Apps Script to retrieve each response’s edit URL.

Troubleshooting

  • No “Edit your response” link: confirm Allow response editing is on, and remind respondents that the link appears only on the confirmation page right after they submit.
  • Lost the edit link: without a saved link, sign-in, or email receipt, respondents can’t return to the same response. They can submit again, and you can delete the duplicate in the Responses tab.
  • Can’t edit the form: you need editor access. Ask the owner to add you with Send > Add collaborators (the three-dot menu).
  • Edited answers not in the sheet: updated responses overwrite the original row in a linked sheet; refresh the sheet to see changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a time limit on editing responses?

No. Respondents can edit as long as Allow response editing is on and the form is accepting responses.

Will I see the original answer after someone edits?

No. The edited response replaces the original, and Forms doesn’t keep a history of changes.

Does editing the form send a new link?

No. The form’s link stays the same, so anyone with it sees your updated version.
