The orange dot at the top of your iPhone screen means an app is using your microphone right now. A green dot means an app is using the camera (or the camera and microphone together). See which app is using the microphone
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen (or up from the bottom on iPhones with a Home button) to open Control Center.
- Look at the top of Control Center. You’ll see the app name and “Microphone” or “Camera,” or the name of an app that recently used it.
Common, normal causes include phone and FaceTime calls, Siri, voice memos, voice messages in chat apps, video recording, dictation, and apps that listen for voice commands.
Stop an app from using your microphone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Turn off the switch next to any app that shouldn’t have access.
Do the same under Camera to manage camera access. If you later need the feature, the app will ask for permission again or you can turn it back on here.
Review recent access with App Privacy Report
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Tap Turn On App Privacy Report if it’s off.
- Check back later to see which apps accessed the microphone, camera, location, and other data, and when.
The report covers the last seven days and is a good way to spot apps that use the mic more often than you’d expect.

Can you turn off the orange dot?
No. Apple doesn’t let you hide the indicator, because it’s there to warn you when your microphone is active. The only change available is Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Differentiate Without Color, which shows an orange square instead of a dot for people who have trouble telling colors apart.
What if the dot appears unexpectedly?
