Facebook gives you two ways to step back from a group: unfollow it to stop seeing posts while staying a member, or leave it to exit completely. Leaving is quiet: Facebook doesn’t notify the group or its admins. This guide shows how to do both on a computer and in the Facebook app, how to turn off notifications instead, and what happens to your posts after you leave.
Quick Answer
Open the group, click or tap Joined (or the ⋯ menu), and choose Leave group, then confirm. To stay a member but hide posts from your Feed, choose Unfollow group instead.

Leave vs. Unfollow vs. Mute Notifications
| Option | Still a member? | Posts in Feed? | Notifications? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave group | No | No | No |
| Unfollow group | Yes | No | Only if you keep them on |
| Turn off notifications | Yes | Yes | No |
Leave a Group on a Computer
- Go to facebook.com and click Groups in the left menu, then select the group.
- Click Joined below the cover photo.
- Click Leave group.
- Click Leave group again to confirm. For groups you own, you may need to appoint another admin first.
Leave a Group in the Facebook App
- Tap the Menu (your profile picture or three lines), then Groups, and open the group.
- Tap Joined (or the group name/⋯ menu).
- Tap Leave group and confirm.
Menu labels change occasionally with app updates, but Leave group is always in the group’s Joined or settings menu.
Unfollow a Group (Stay a Member)
- Open the group and click or tap Joined.
- Choose Unfollow group.
You can still visit and post in the group; you just won’t see its posts in your Feed.
Turn Off Group Notifications
- Open the group and click the bell icon or Joined > Manage notifications.
- Choose Off or Highlights.
What Happens After You Leave
- Members and admins aren’t notified.
- Your past posts and comments usually stay in the group unless you delete them first.
- You can rejoin a public group anytime; private groups may require admin approval again.
- Choosing Prevent other members from adding you back (if offered) stops others from re-adding you.
Leave Several Groups Quickly
Open Groups > Your groups (or the groups list in the app), and for each group tap ⋯ > Leave group. Facebook doesn’t offer bulk leaving.
