Windows can disable an HP laptop’s touch screen through Device Manager. This is useful for troubleshooting phantom touches or when you prefer mouse and keyboard input, but it does not physically disconnect the touch hardware.
Steps
- Connect or confirm a working mouse, touchpad, and keyboard before disabling touch.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Locate HID-compliant touch screen and confirm you have selected the correct device.
- Choose Disable device and confirm the warning.
- Test the computer with the remaining input devices.
Know how to restore touch
Return to Device Manager, locate the same HID-compliant touch screen entry, and choose Enable device. Keep this path in mind before disabling touch on a convertible that depends heavily on its screen for input.
Phantom touches can indicate another problem
If the screen is registering taps by itself, install appropriate Windows, HP, firmware, and driver updates for the exact model. Physical screen damage or digitizer failure may require hardware service.
Do not uninstall random HID devices
Human Interface Devices can include touchpads, pen input, buttons, sensors, and other hardware. Disable only the touch-screen entry you have identified.
Windows 10 support has ended
Windows 10 reached the end of standard support in October 2025. On a compatible HP laptop, migration to a supported Windows release should be part of the longer-term plan.
