Chrome on Windows normally uses the operating system’s proxy configuration rather than maintaining a separate general-purpose proxy setting. On Windows 10, Chrome’s system proxy link opens the Windows proxy controls.
Steps
- Open Chrome and go to Settings.
- Search Settings for proxy.
- Choose Open your computer’s proxy settings.
- In Windows, open the available Proxy settings.
- For an organization-provided setup script, enter only the URL supplied by the administrator.
- For a manual proxy, enter the authorized server address and port.
- Save the setting, reopen Chrome, and test both an intended website and any internal resource that should use the proxy.
A proxy affects more than Chrome
Because Chrome uses Windows networking configuration, a system proxy can affect other applications that honor those settings. Do not treat it as a browser-only change.
Use only a trusted proxy
A proxy can observe or influence network traffic. Do not send passwords, business data, or sensitive browsing through an unknown free proxy service.
Work networks can configure proxies automatically
Organizations can use policy, PAC files, VPN clients, or security agents. Follow IT instructions rather than overwriting managed settings.
Windows 10 is unsupported
Windows 10 reached the end of standard support in October 2025. For ongoing browsing and sensitive account use, move the proxy workflow to a supported operating system.
Know how to undo the change
Record the original automatic-detection, setup-script, and manual-proxy settings before editing them. If websites stop loading or internal services become unreachable, restore those values rather than adding unrelated DNS, firewall, or certificate changes.
