To remove a shortcut from the desktop in Windows 11, right-click it and click the Delete (trash can) icon at the top of the menu, or select it and press Delete. Shortcuts that come back or need admin permission
Some shortcuts appear on every user’s desktop because they’re stored in the Public Desktop folder (C:\Users\Public\Desktop). Deleting them asks for administrator permission; click Continue. If a shortcut keeps returning after updates, the app reinstalls it; look for a setting in the app, or uninstall the app if you don’t use it.
Hide all desktop icons
Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose View > uncheck Show desktop icons. The icons are still there; check the option again to bring them back.
Remove system icons (Recycle Bin, This PC)
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Click Desktop icon settings.
- Uncheck icons like Recycle Bin, Computer, or Network, and click OK.
Stop apps from adding shortcuts
- During installation, uncheck Create a desktop shortcut when the installer offers it.
- Microsoft Store apps don’t add desktop shortcuts by default.
Tidy the desktop instead
- Right-click the desktop > Sort by to organize icons.
