You can remove Dropbox from a Windows 10 PC without automatically deleting the files stored in your Dropbox cloud account. Before uninstalling, confirm that synchronization has finished and identify any files that exist only online.
Uninstall the Dropbox desktop app
- Select the Dropbox icon in the notification area and check sync status.
- Wait for important changes to finish uploading.
- Quit the Dropbox desktop application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Dropbox and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts and restart the PC if necessary.
What happens to Dropbox files?
Removing the application does not normally erase the copy stored in your Dropbox account. Local files that were downloaded to the PC can also remain after uninstalling, depending on the configuration. Online-only files, however, may have been placeholders rather than complete local copies.
Before uninstalling because you are retiring the computer, open any critical offline files and verify a second backup. Do not assume a sync service is the same thing as an independent backup.
If you only want to stop syncing temporarily
Pausing sync, signing out, or unlinking the computer may be more appropriate than uninstalling the application. Check Dropbox’s current settings for the action that matches your goal.
Removing leftovers
Do not delete unfamiliar Dropbox folders until you have verified their contents online and locally. A folder can contain unsynced or intentionally offline data. If you reinstall later, obtain the installer from Dropbox’s official site.
Windows 10 is now outside regular support; migrate compatible PCs to Windows 11 or use an applicable ESU path while transitioning.
