How to Migrate a Nest Account to a Google Account (What to Know First)

If you still sign in to the Nest app with an older Nest account, you can move it to a Google Account from inside the app. Open the Nest app, tap Settings > Account > Migrate to a Google Account, choose (or create) the Google Account you want to use, review the permissions, choose which home members to bring along, and tap Complete migration. Migration can’t be undone, so read what changes below before you start.

Nest accounts were created by people who started using the Nest app before August 19, 2019. Accounts created later are already Google Accounts.

Before you migrate

• It’s permanent. You can’t switch back to a Nest account afterward.
• Home members must be re-invited. Everyone who shares your home needs their own Google Account and a new invitation after you migrate.
• Some integrations change. Older “Works with Nest” connections were shut down, and some third-party services may need to be reconnected through Google’s current integrations. Check any smart home routines or apps that control your Nest devices.
• TV apps stop working. After migrating, you can’t use the Nest app on Apple TV or Android TV.
• Update your apps. Install the latest Nest and Google Home apps first.

How to migrate your Nest account to Google

1. Open the Nest app and sign in with your Nest account.
2. Tap Settings (the gear) > Account.
3. Tap Migrate to a Google Account. You may also see this as a banner on the home screen.
4. Choose the Google Account you want to use, or create a new one.
5. Review the information Google will access and tap Allow or Continue.
6. Select the home members you want to migrate with you, if asked.
7. Review Google’s terms and privacy information, then tap Complete migration.

From now on, sign in to the Nest app with your Google Account instead of your Nest email and password.

After you migrate

1. Re-invite home members. Open the Google Home app, tap your home, then Settings > Household (or Home members) > Invite a person. Each person needs a Google Account.
2. Add your Nest devices to Google Home if they don’t appear automatically. Many Nest thermostats, cameras, and doorbells can be managed in the Google Home app.
3. Reconnect third-party services. Check apps and assistants you used with Nest and link them again through the Google Home app if needed.
4. Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account to protect your home devices.

To add a device, open the Google Home app, tap Devices > Add, and follow the prompts for your Nest product.

Before moving a camera, you may need to reset your Nest camera.

Troubleshooting

• No migrate option. You may already use a Google Account. Check Settings > Account for a Google email. Also update the Nest app.
• Migration fails. Make sure the Google Account isn’t a child account or a work account with restrictions, then try again.
• A home member lost access. They need to be re-invited after migration. Send a new invite from Google Home.
• Devices missing. Pull down to refresh the Nest app, or sign out and back in with your Google Account.
