A Windows 10 PC can be legitimately activated without exposing a product key because Microsoft also uses digital licenses. Check activation status before assuming you need to recover a 25-character code.
Check the activation page
Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Windows can report that it is activated with a digital license, possibly linked to a Microsoft account. That entitlement can reactivate the same hardware without you manually entering a key.
Look for an OEM firmware key
On a PC that shipped with Windows, PowerShell can query firmware with (Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey. If an OEM key is embedded, it can appear in the result.
Keep any displayed key private. A blank result is normal on systems that rely on a digital license or another licensing method.
Find a separately purchased retail license
Check the Microsoft account/order history, retailer confirmation, product card, or legitimate packaging associated with the purchase. Work computers can use volume activation and should be handled by the organization’s administrator.
Do not use activation cracks
KMS emulators, leaked keys, “activators,” and unknown key-finder utilities can be illegal, unsafe, or both. They are not a substitute for a valid license.
Windows 10 standard support ended in October 2025. If the goal is to license a computer for continued everyday use, verify Windows 11 compatibility before spending money to maintain a Windows 10 installation.
Product-key recovery is most useful before a hardware change or reinstall, but even a recovered key may not be transferable. Record the activation status and license channel before replacing major hardware, and link an eligible digital license to the appropriate Microsoft account when Microsoft’s activation workflow supports it.
