If you cannot sign in to a Windows 10 computer that you own or are authorized to use, recover the account rather than bypassing the password. Instructions that replace system files, activate hidden accounts, or use credential-dumping tools can defeat authentication and may expose data belonging to someone else.
Regain access to your own Windows 10 PC
- Identify whether the sign-in uses a Microsoft account, local account, PIN, or organization-managed account.
- If you forgot a Windows Hello PIN, use the sign-in options and Microsoft’s supported PIN recovery/reset process when offered.
- For a Microsoft account password, use Microsoft’s official account recovery and identity-verification process.
- For a local account, use configured security questions or a previously created password-reset disk.
- If another authorized administrator already exists on your own PC, use normal account-management tools where appropriate.
- For a work or school device, contact the organization that manages it.
When you need files but cannot recover the account
Encryption matters. BitLocker or EFS can prevent data access without the appropriate recovery key or credential. Do not assume removing a drive or booting another operating system will make protected files readable.
Resetting the PC is a last resort
Windows recovery options may let an owner reinstall/reset the computer, but applications and data can be removed depending on the chosen path. A reset is not a method for preserving access to another persons account.
After access is restored
Update recovery information, use a reputable password manager, and store BitLocker recovery information securely. Windows 10 reached end of standard support in October 2025, so migrate eligible systems to Windows 11 or use an applicable ESU transition arrangement.
If you purchased or inherited a used PC that still contains another persons account, the appropriate path is normally to have the prior owner remove it or reset/reinstall the device for your own use, not to enter their profile.
