Google’s weather notifications use the language of the Google app, which usually follows your phone’s language. To change it on Android, go to Settings > Apps > Google > Language (or App languages) and pick the language you want, or change your phone’s language in Settings > System > Languages. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Google > Language. New weather alerts arrive in the new language, though it can take a day for the change to show up.
Below are the steps for each method, how to set the temperature unit, and how to turn weather notifications off if you don’t want them at all.
Method 1: Change the Google app’s language (Android 13 and later)
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications) and find Google. You may need to tap See all apps.
- Tap Language or App languages.
- Choose a language. Pick System default to match your phone.

You can also reach this from Settings > System > Languages > App languages > Google. Menu names vary a bit by phone maker.
Method 2: Change your phone’s language (Android)
- Go to Settings > System > Languages (on Samsung, General management > Language).
- Tap Add a language if needed, then drag your preferred language to the top of the list.
This changes the language for every app that follows the system language, including Google’s weather alerts.
Method 3: On an iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Google (on iOS 17 and earlier, scroll down to Google in Settings).
- Tap Language and choose a language.
The Google app on iPhone sends weather updates through its own notifications, so its language setting controls them.
If weather alerts are still in the wrong language
- Check your Google Account language. Go to myaccount.google.com > Personal info > General preferences for the web > Language, and set your preferred language.
- Check the search language. In the Google app, tap your profile picture > Settings > Language & region > Search language.
- Force-stop the Google app. In Settings > Apps > Google, tap Force stop, then open the app again.
- Update the Google app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Wait a day. Scheduled daily forecasts may already be queued in the old language.
Change Celsius or Fahrenheit
- Search weather in the Google app, or open the weather shortcut on your home screen.
- Tap the °C or °F toggle next to the temperature. Some versions have this under the three-dot menu > Settings > Units.
Turn weather notifications off or on
- Open the weather page in the Google app (search weather).
- Tap the three-dot menu (or your profile picture) > Settings > Notifications.
- Turn daily forecasts and severe weather alerts on or off.
You can also turn off all Google app notification categories you don’t want in Settings > Apps > Google > Notifications.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my weather notifications suddenly change language?
Usually because your phone or Google app language changed, often after adding a keyboard or language or after an update. Check both settings above.
Can I get weather in one language and the rest of my phone in another?
Yes, on Android 13 and later. Set the Google app to a different language with App languages.
Does this change Google Assistant’s language too?
No. Assistant has its own language setting in the Google app under Settings > Google Assistant > Languages.
