Many Lenovo laptops with a backlit keyboard let you control the light with a keyboard shortcut, but not every Lenovo model includes backlighting. Windows 10 does not add a keyboard light to hardware that lacks one, so confirm the exact model’s specifications if the shortcut does nothing.
Turn on a Lenovo keyboard backlight
- Look at the Spacebar for a keyboard-backlight symbol.
- Press Fn + Spacebar on Lenovo models that use this shortcut.
- Press the combination again to cycle through the available brightness levels or turn the light off.
- If your model uses a different key, follow the keyboard legend and Lenovo documentation for that exact laptop.
- Test the light in a dim room where the change is easier to see.
If Fn + Spacebar does nothing
Check whether the laptop was actually sold with a backlit keyboard. Similar ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion configurations can look nearly identical while using different keyboard hardware. The absence of a backlight symbol is a useful clue, but the model’s specifications are the better authority.
Check Lenovo software and firmware only when appropriate
If the hardware supports backlighting but the shortcut stopped working, install applicable Lenovo hotkey/system-interface updates through Lenovo’s official support tools or Windows Update. Also check model-specific UEFI settings when Lenovo documents a keyboard-light option.
Power behavior can affect the light
Some Lenovo systems turn the keyboard light off after inactivity or after sleep and require the shortcut again. That behavior is different from a failed backlight.
Windows 10 standard support ended in October 2025. Eligible Lenovo laptops should migrate to a supported Windows release.
Brightness levels vary by model
Some keyboards offer only off and on, while others provide multiple brightness levels. The shortcut cycles only through modes the installed keyboard hardware supports; Windows cannot add additional levels through a generic setting.
