How to Revert Windows 11 Update: A Step-by-Step Guide

If a recent Windows 11 feature update causes a serious problem, Windows may let you return to the previous version for a limited time. This is different from uninstalling an ordinary monthly quality update.

  1. Back up files you changed since the upgrade and connect a laptop to power.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  3. If Go back is available, select it and follow the questions about why you are reverting.
  4. Read the warnings, keep the PC powered, and sign in after Windows restores the earlier release.

Why Go back may be unavailable

Windows keeps the files needed for a feature-version rollback only temporarily, and Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense can remove them. If the button is unavailable, do not download random rollback utilities. A backup restore or clean installation may be the remaining supported recovery path.

Quality updates use a different route

For a recent cumulative update, use Windows Update’s update-history/uninstall controls or the recovery environment when Microsoft documents that approach. Removing security updates should be a troubleshooting measure, not a permanent way to avoid patching.

Before reverting

Make sure you know the Windows sign-in password, not only a PIN, and preserve BitLocker recovery information. Applications or drivers installed after the feature upgrade may need to be reinstalled after the rollback.

If Windows asks why you are going back, the answer is feedback rather than a repair choice. After the rollback, pause long enough to identify the incompatible driver or application and check for a vendor fix before accepting the same feature upgrade again.
