- Press Windows key + R, type regedit, press Enter, and click Yes.
- Paste HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics into the address bar and press Enter.
- Double-click IconSpacing (horizontal space). Change the value from -1125 to a smaller negative number, such as -900. Click OK.
- Double-click IconVerticalSpacing (vertical space) and change it the same way.
- Close Registry Editor, then sign out and sign back in (or restart).

- Long file names may be cut off with tighter spacing. Rename shortcuts to shorter names if needed.
How to restore the default spacing
Set both IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing back to -1125, then sign out and back in.
