Windows 11 can create ZIP files, but it can’t add a password to them. To password-protect a ZIP file, install the free 7-Zip app. Right-click the files or folder, choose Show more options > 7-Zip > Add to archive, set Archive format to zip, type a password under Encryption, choose AES-256, and click OK. Anyone who opens the ZIP file will need the password to extract the files.
Here’s the full process, how to open a protected ZIP, and what to know about ZIP encryption.
How to password-protect a ZIP file with 7-Zip
- Download and install 7-Zip from 7-zip.org.
- Select the files or folder you want to protect, then right-click them.
- Click Show more options, then 7-Zip > Add to archive. (7-Zip may also appear in the main Windows 11 menu.)
- Set Archive format to zip.
- Under Encryption, enter and re-enter a strong password.
- Set Encryption method to AES-256.
- Click OK.

After creating the protected ZIP, delete the original unprotected files if you don’t want them on your PC.
ZIP or 7z?
| ZIP with AES-256 | 7z with AES-256 | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on other computers | Most, but Windows’ built-in tool can’t open AES-encrypted ZIPs | Needs 7-Zip or a compatible app |
| Hides file names | No | Yes, with Encrypt file names checked |
| Compression | Good | Usually better |
If the recipient doesn’t have 7-Zip, the ZipCrypto method opens in Windows’ built-in tool, but it’s much weaker. Use AES-256 for anything sensitive.
How to open a password-protected ZIP
- Right-click the ZIP file and choose 7-Zip > Extract Here or Extract files.
- Enter the password when asked.
Tips for sharing protected ZIP files
- Use a long password, like a phrase of several random words.
- Send the password separately, such as by text message, not in the same email as the file.
- Remember that file names inside a ZIP are still visible. Use the 7z format if names are sensitive.
Other ways to protect files on Windows 11
- BitLocker or device encryption protects your entire drive.
- Password-protect a folder with an encrypted archive or other tools. See how to password protect a folder in Windows.
- Office files can be password-protected directly in Word or Excel under File > Info > Protect Document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I password-protect a ZIP in Windows without extra software?
No. Windows’ built-in Compressed Folders feature doesn’t support passwords.
What if I forget the password?
There’s no way to recover it with AES-256 encryption. Store your password safely, like in a password manager.
Is 7-Zip safe and free?
Yes. It’s free, open-source software. Download it only from 7-zip.org.
Does this work on Windows 10?
Yes. The steps are the same, except you won’t need Show more options.
